Light Sensitivity and Vision Complaints After a Crash: A Guide for Sarasota and Bradenton Providers
Why light sensitivity and vision complaints after a crash deserve a closer look, what to ask at the first visit, and when Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice providers should refer.
A hypothetical patient comes in ten days after being rear-ended on US-41 near downtown Sarasota. Her neck is sore, which is why she booked the visit. Near the end, she mentions that afternoon glare on the drive home hurts her eyes, her phone screen feels too bright, and she keeps losing her place when she reads.
It is easy to file that under neck pain or tired eyes. After a crash, it can also be part of a concussion. This guide covers what the research shows, what to ask, and when to refer.
Key takeaways
- The CDC lists being bothered by light and blurry vision among concussion symptoms.
- About 30% of people had light sensitivity one week after a traumatic brain injury (Merezhinskaya et al., 2021).
- Patients often describe vision trouble as reading headaches, screen strain or overwhelm in bright stores.
- Sudden vision loss or double vision with a worsening headache needs emergency care.
Light sensitivity is common after a brain injury
The CDC lists being bothered by light or noise and blurry vision among the physical symptoms of concussion. The research backs that up.
A 2021 meta-analysis of 75 publications found that about 30% of people had light sensitivity (photophobia) one week after a traumatic brain injury. That fell to about 19% between one week and one month, and to about 14% between one and three months. For some people it lasted up to a year (Merezhinskaya et al., Optometry and Vision Science, 2021).
Most people improve, but not all of them, and not right away.
Vision complaints can show up in other ways
Patients rarely say "I have a vision problem." They say reading gives them a headache, the grocery store feels overwhelming, or their eyes feel tired by lunch.
In one study of 100 adolescents seen in a concussion program, 69% had at least one vision diagnosis, most often problems with focusing or with the eyes working together (Master et al., Clinical Pediatrics, 2016). That sample was teenagers, so the numbers do not transfer directly to adults. The lesson does: vision symptoms after concussion are common enough to ask about.
Why this matters in Sarasota and Manatee
Florida's 2024 Traffic Crash Facts report counts more than 13,000 crashes and about 8,800 injuries across Sarasota and Manatee counties. Many of those patients go straight back to driving on I-75, US-41, US-301, SR-64 and SR-70, often into strong sun.
Water glare along the John Ringling Causeway, the Sunshine Skyway (I-275) and the Manatee River bridges is part of daily life here. A patient who suddenly cannot tolerate that light, or who feels unsteady in a bright, busy store, is telling you something worth writing down.
A patient who suddenly cannot tolerate Florida sunlight is telling you something worth writing down.
Questions worth asking at the first visit
A few direct questions can bring these symptoms out:
- Since the crash, does light bother you more than it used to, indoors or outdoors?
- Do screens, reading or driving bring on headaches or eye strain?
- Have you noticed blurry or double vision, or losing your place on a page?
- Do busy places with bright lights or movement make you dizzy or tired?
- Were any of these present before the crash, and if so, have they changed?
Write down when each symptom started and what makes it worse. A dated history makes later changes easier to see.
When to refer

New double vision, a loss of vision, or vision changes with a worsening headache need prompt medical attention. Ongoing light sensitivity, eye strain or reading trouble may call for an eye care professional or a physician who treats concussion.
When concussion is a concern, Braintree's mobile team can perform concussion and TBI testing at your own office in Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Lakewood Ranch, North Port, Palmetto and nearby communities. Scheduling is coordinated with you. Results come back as physician-reviewed diagnostic reports, and you reach your own clinical findings. Frequently asked questions
Is light sensitivity a sign of concussion?
It can be. The CDC lists being bothered by light or noise among concussion symptoms, and a 2021 meta-analysis found about 30% of people had light sensitivity one week after a traumatic brain injury.
How long does light sensitivity last after a concussion?
For many people it improves within three months. In the 2021 meta-analysis, some people still had it up to 12 months after the injury.
Can a concussion cause blurry vision or trouble reading?
Yes. Blurry vision is a listed concussion symptom, and problems with focusing or eye teaming are common in studies of concussed adolescents.
When should a provider refer for vision symptoms after a crash?
Sudden vision loss or double vision with a worsening headache needs emergency care. Ongoing light sensitivity, eye strain or reading trouble may call for an eye care professional or a physician who treats concussion.
Can Braintree test patients at my Sarasota or Bradenton office?
Yes. Braintree's mobile team performs testing at the referring provider's office, with scheduling coordinated with the provider.
